TER-AI: AI-powered education connected to employment
Turing College has completed TER-AI, a research and innovation project that used artificial intelligence to connect learning more closely with the skills employers need.
TER-AI stands for Tertiary Education Redefined: AI-Driven Upskilling & Reskilling Platform for Industry-Relevant Digital Skills. The project was funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe, through the European Innovation Council Accelerator programme.
About the project
TER-AI addressed a persistent challenge in education: people can complete training with theoretical knowledge but without clear, demonstrable evidence of the competencies employers need.
Between 1 August 2024 and 31 July 2026, Turing College designed, built and deployed four connected AI capabilities within its adaptive learning platform. All four are now operational in production.
Together, these capabilities connect what a learner does and can demonstrate with the skills employers are looking for.
What the project delivered
Competence intelligence
The platform tracks each learner's skill profile from their learning activity, quiz performance and project work. This builds an evidence-based picture of what each learner knows and can do, which updates as they progress.
Personalised learning paths
Learners receive AI-generated project briefs adapted to their professional role, industry context and current skill gaps. This keeps learning relevant to their work and development needs.
Evidence-based tutor matching
The platform recommends mentors and peers based on demonstrated subject knowledge and the quality of feedback they give, rather than seniority or availability alone. This makes learner support more targeted and effective.
Learner-company matching
Competency-based job matching connects learners and employers in real time. Both sides receive a transparent breakdown of matching and missing competencies, reducing guesswork in hiring and job searching.
Why the project matters
TER-AI shows how an online learning platform can understand what a learner can do, adapt what they learn next, connect them with the right support, and match their competencies with employer needs.
The project offers a practical model for education built on evidence of ability rather than credentials alone, showing how adaptive learning, competence intelligence and skills-based hiring can work together at scale.
What comes next
Turing College will continue to build on these foundations, deepening the connection between learner competency data and employer needs, so the transition from learning to employment becomes faster and more reliable.
